Mind your own business: the importance of buying local

Mind your own business: the importance of buying local

This week marks the beginning of British Food Fortnight.

Over the fortnight we've got a free prize give-away for 10 lucky participants to win a bountiful Gert British vegetable box!>

Some of the reasons we should all be supporting our local businesses:

Better value for money
A recent study by the Federation of Small Business found that “doing business locally is better value for money as small local firms generated £746 million more for the local economy compared to large local businesses – even though more than £500 million less was spent with them.

"For every £1 spent with a small or medium-sized business 63p was re-spent in the local area compared to 40p in every £1 spent with a larger business.”

As well as being a local community run business The Community Farm also accepts Bristol Pounds so that you can be sure that the money you spend with us is staying in the local economy.

Community spirit
It can be easy to overlook the social importance of buying locally but local businesses are often a hotbed of activity. Some host community events, such as our Community Farmer Days and children’s activities. Unfortunately with many of these it is a case of “use it or lose it” and if the businesses are not supported often the community events will vanish along with them

There is also a strong community value in markets, such as Bath Farmers’ Market. They are not merely retail outlets; they also serve as a public space for people to come together.

Think globally, buy locally
Buying produce in season reduces the distance from field to fork. If your food doesn't travel far, less fuel, packaging and refrigeration will be needed and so the lower the environmental impact will be. This is one of the many reasons why we source everything we can’t grow on the farm from as close to home as possible.
