Gardening group enjoy a day on the farm

Participants enrolled on a Gardening for Wellbeing course joined us at The Community Farm for a day of picking and planting. A warm welcome awaited the 15 people who made the journey from Weston-Super-Mare to our special spot in the heart of the Chew Valley.

Activities were run by the farm’s Engagement Leader, Hatty Richards, who was on hand to offer support throughout the day. She gave a brief history of the farm, outlined what we grow, and explained our ethos and values.

Introductions over, and the group got stuck in planting coriander and picking broad beans. The visitors also enjoyed a leisurely lunch and unrivalled lakeside views at our yurt.

The course - designed to build confidence, improve mental and physical health and help people get back into work - is organised by the adult education charity, Workers’ Educational Association (WEA).

Course tutor Sallie Parsons said: “We enjoyed a day away from Weston having fun and working together in a place where we felt safe and valued.

“It was a chance to show the benefits of future volunteering and make people aware of their skills and capabilities.”

The Community Farm offers charitable organisations and community groups a chance to be a farmer for the day. If you’re a not-for-profit, and work with vulnerable or underprivileged groups, we don’t charge, though any donations are gratefully accepted.

Anyone interested in taking up this opportunity should email Hatty for more information
