News from the farm: August

Having the support of organisations through Adopt-a-Crop goes a long way to raising our spirits at The Community Farm. Such sponsorship is vital for maintaining our rich programme of educational activities for adults and children. It also allows us to think big. The farm is constantly evolving, every corner earmarked for a project designed to educate and delight in equal measure. But big ideas need strong foundations and support.

That’s why this month, we’d like to say a massive thank you to our five current Adopt-a-Crop sponsors; Pukka Herbs (Curly kale), Sustainable Kitchens (Cucumbers), Better Food (Leeks), Natracare (Fennel) and Umberslade (Cavolo nero).

Pukka Herbs were one of the first local organisations to sign-up to our scheme, and their staff will shortly be joining us at the farm for a team day out. They’ll get the chance to check on their adopted crop and spend quality time in the fresh air with colleagues in a place that seems to bring out the best in everyone. Maybe it’s the absence of office furniture, or perhaps the satisfaction of realising you’re so muddy you may as well stop trying to stay clean, but a day at the farm never fails to raise a smile. And we’re lucky to be able to offer time in such a magical place, to thank those that choose to give us that support.

Adopt-a-Crop offers a range of packages and perks. Smaller companies (with fewer than 10 employees) may be interested in our Adopt-a-Seed scheme. For information, email .

If your organisation hasn’t signed-up yet - don’t worry. You can still enjoy a day of fun in the fresh air by attending one of our Community Farmer Days. We’re led by Community Farmer, Ian Sumpter, and fuelled by a superhuman amount of goodwill, homemade soup and Ian’s (in)famous chilli flapjacks. Add to this the opportunity to spend a full day in the countryside, an endless goldmine of food-growing trivia and the unmatched satisfaction of pulling up the biggest dock from the leek field, and you have yourself a recipe for the perfect Saturday.

Our Community Farmer Days continue right through until November on selected Saturdays, and run from 10am to 4pm. Why not join us one weekend?  That’s exactly what I’ll be doing!
