An Early and Abundant Season at The Farm!

Here at The Community Farm we are lucky enough to have around 120 apple trees, consisting of four heritage varieties, magnificently lining our main drive. This year, as with much of the produce we have growing here, the warmer than average temperatures have meant that our apples are ready well in advance, as outlined by Grower Harley, may mean a rethink in our approach for the years ahead...

Our apple harvest is already well underway here at The Farm — almost a full month earlier than usual this year! The warm spring and record-hot summer have pushed everything forward, leaving the trees heavy with fruit with apples dropping significantly earlier than normal.

This week, you’ll find our delicious Katy apples making their way into your boxes. Any smaller ones graded out will head off for juicing and cider — nothing goes to waste.

The shifting climate continues to change the rhythm of our growing season. The gap between imported and locally grown apples is narrowing, and it’s fascinating (and sometimes challenging) to witness these changes from a grower’s perspective.

Despite the heat, the trees have been generous, though they would certainly have appreciated more rain. If summers like this continue, we may need to rethink our approach — perhaps more thinning of fruit earlier in the season and even exploring irrigation for our well-established trees.

Finally, a huge thank you to our dedicated pruning crew who braved the wind and rain last winter to give the orchard the care it needed. Because of your hard work, we can now enjoy crisp, juicy apples — and soon, a well-earned toast with cider!
