Over the last few years we’ve been working with Square Food Foundation to enable access to The Community Farm from more diverse and under-represented communities. Square Food Foundation is a charity that works to reduce hunger, improve health and bring people together through food and cooking. They believe that everyone should have access to, and the skills to prepare, healthy, affordable food that’s good for people and the planet. Based in Knowle West, South Bristol, an area of multiple deprivation, they offer free cooking classes to marginalised groups.
Alongside their free courses, they also run team building sessions, corporate days, private hire, and paid classes which help to support their work. They also offer catering for events including for celebrations, corporate receptions, community events and weddings.
We have been working with Square Food to bring food to life in every sense, welcoming their groups to the farm to experience first-hand how organic food is grown and participate in a field to fork day, where food is harvested and cooked within a few hours.
Square Food's Charlotte Fife, Cooking Teacher and Project Coordinator, says:
“Every time we come to The Community Farm our students not only gain valuable knowledge about the soil and organic growing, but they also get to experience a wonderful welcome, beautiful surroundings, and the chance to eat the most delicious fresh produce. Often our students haven’t ever visited such a setting, and so it is a fantastic opportunity to step out of the comfort zone and learn how to pick, plant, tend to the soil, and cook with seasonal produce.”
It has been a real joy to work with them on engaging people with their food, where it comes from and how to prepare it in an honest and exciting way that brings out the best in our seasonal produce.
