Growing schools!

Growing schools!

Last November The Community Farm’s funding application to Santander’s Social Enterprise Development Award was successful and we received a wonderful £50,000 grant; the largest amount awarded in the South-West. This money has been gratefully received and helped the farm to buy some much needed farm machinery and improve resources for the Volunteering and Community Learning Programme. In addition to the grant, the farm’s Community Learning Programme was fortunate to receive some extra funding from Santander in February 2014 to welcome Sara Turrill to the team as our Community Learning Intern. Sara has joined us part time for six months and here she shares what she's been getting up to:

Having volunteered on the Community Learning project since April 2013, I have been helping Claire Rosling, the Community Learning Officer to develop the farm’s Primary Learning Programme and supported children’s activities at farm events, courses and Forest School days. The funding from Santander has enabled me to further commit to helping the farm reach a wider audience through the Community Learning Progamme by co-ordinating and delivering a seed-growing project with five local primary schools. I am currently working with Blagford Primary School, Chew Stoke Academy, Chew Magna Primary School, Winford Primary School and Bishop Sutton Primary School, with various year groups, helping them to transform their playgrounds into organic growing havens!
As a part of the project, I have created a free resource pack for teachers, helping them to develop their playground and encourage outdoor learning. The Community Farm has generously donated seeds to the project, enabling schools to grow a variety of seasonal salads, vegetables and flowers that will be harvest-able before the summer holiday. I have recently delivered a seed-sowing workshop with each school, where children learned about organic farming at The Community Farm and choose a seed each to sow. I will soon be returning to each school to see how their plants are brightening up their playgrounds and host a picnic with each participating class with lovely organic produce from The Community Farm and the school garden.
Alongside the seed-growing project, I have been busy on a whole host of projects at the farm! From running a Community Farm stall at local events, to leading school visits at the farm, to running workshops at the BBC Food Connections event, there has not been a quiet moment!
I am extremely grateful to Santander for the opportunity to work for The Community Farm as the Community Learning Intern over the last three months. Not only has it enabled me to further develop my skills and experience in outdoor education but also to help the farm expand the Community Learning Programme and engage increasing numbers of local people in the work that the farm does.
