Volunteering update

  • Volunteering

It's nearly April but still very wintery and it looks like it'll be a few weeks before we see a rise to normal temperatures. When Spring finally arrives we'll be in a big hurry to plant out our crops. Field volunteers will be particularly helpful to us as we'll need as many hands on deck as possible.

That said, due to the challenges of the past year, our small number of staff are working even harder than usual. We know it takes time to induct, manage and look after new volunteers, to ensure that they have a safe, productive and ultimately enjoyable time at the Farm. So we need to use our time wisely.

This means we've made some changes to our volunteering activities this year.

Community Farmer Days
There'll be fewer Community Farmer Days but we planning to make them bigger events. With the help of a large group of volunteers we'll be able to tackle the bigger farm jobs. Meanwhile, volunteers will be able to help out in beautiful farm surroundings, get to know fellow Community Farmers and learn more about growing.

2013 Community Farmer Days will be held on:

Saturday 13 April

Saturday 22 June (followed by our mid-summer picnic)

Saturday 19 October

Saturday 9 November

Regular Weekday Volunteering
We'll only be taking on new regular weekday volunteers on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We hope to create a real buzz on those days, when regular volunteers can work together while enjoying the tranquility of the farm. This will leave the other days free for us to develop our care farming activities and for the staff to concentrate on other areas of the Farm's work.

We'll aim to hold Orientation Days each month (either on a Tuesday or Thursday) to introduce new volunteers to the farm.
