The Community Farm is a not-for-profit social enterprise based in the Chew Valley just outside Bristol and Bath. We are a nature-friendly farm, founded in 2011 as a Community Benefit Society and are owned and governed by our shareholder members.
Working with a network of organic producers and local farmers who share our ethics, we supply fresh, local and organic food via a box delivery service to hundreds of households throughout Bristol, Bath, The Chew Valley, Frome and Weston-Super-Mare.
Any surplus that we make is reinvested into our own Community programmes and used to fund volunteering sessions, wellbeing courses and events at The Farm; as well as helping us manage the land in a way that’s beneficial for all life.
We welcome everyone in our Community to nourish their body and mind by spending time on our shared land. Whether you’re interested in learning, therapy or play, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved for individuals and for groups.
We are always looking for funding to keep our community programme running. If you would like to support us, please donate here.
One evening in 2009 a handful of local people gathered around a kitchen table to join Luke Hasell (farmer in the Chew Valley) and Phil Haughton (founder of the Better Food Company) in their ambition to create a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) project on Luke’s family land. The aim was an open farm, producing local food, involving lots of people, and caring for the natural world – an antidote to the harmful industrialised, global food system.
In the beginning we had a blank field – no tracks, trees, irrigation, polytunnels or built structures and about 7 staff. The field team took their breaks under a tarpaulin, admin was done from a cabin two miles away, and boxes were packed in a dark, old warehouse down the road.
Since then, we have developed the site, built the team (now around 30 paid staff), learned about the land, expanded the box scheme and created a very special place where over a thousand people each year enjoy learning and working on the land.

Our growing operation is based in Chew Magna, overlooking the beautiful Chew Valley Lake. We currently farm on 8.3 acres with the whole site extending to 15 acres. We are happy to be farming on Grade 1 agricultural land, which means we have a fantastic sandy loam soil that allows us to grow a huge variety of crops.Find out more
