News from the farm: January 2016

This Christmas more people bought our vegetable boxes in a single week than ever before – the perfect end to a record breaking year! It has also been a fantastic year for our growing operation, with some amazing produce grown by volunteers, trainees and staff, all under the watchful eye of our Head Grower John. Our Community Farmer Days are growing in stature and popularity and new faces are always appearing amongst the regular volunteers. None of this would be possible without the support of everyone who buys a box, helps on the field or has invested in the farm.>

@Bristol Community Farm Take Over

This weekend sees a very exciting event for The Community Farm. We will be taking over @Bristol for the day to teach kids about why organic farming and seasonal eating are so important. The day is being led by the wonderful Claire Rosling of Earthwise (www.earthwise.com). Children will have the chance to be creative in the kitchen, get their hands dirty to find out about soils, and dissect beans under the ProScope!  If you want to have a go at all this and more then pop along to @Bristol on Saturday 16 January. We will be there all day!

Frank

The arrival of storm Frank saw the toppling our beloved yurt. Unfortunately the strong winds were too much for the poor yurt to withstand. However not all is lost. It is thankfully repairable and after we manage to source a new crown we will be able to put it back together. It’ll be a long hard day, but we’re hoping that between volunteers and staff we’ll be able to make it stronger than ever before. Luckily the rest of the field survived relatively unscathed.

These are a few of my least favourite things

Snakes, sharks, slugs. Spot the odd one out. Yup, it’s slugs. My single biggest fear in life. I can just about deal with them in an average year (my partner is more than adept at removing them from cabbages for me). However, this mild winter is making the field a heaven for slugs. Hardly a day goes by when I don’t hear about the slugs nibbling away at our kales and cabbages. Luckily we have the wonderful (and locally sourced) poet, Matt Harvey, on hand to sum up our ill-feeling towards the “squishetty spoilsports” that are binging on our brassicas! If you have any good tips for removing slugs (harmlessly) from your vegetables, please share on our Facebook or Twitter. I’m sure that there are more people like me out there who could do with the advice.

Reactn

We have had a fantastic response to Reactn, our new online and mobile feedback tool. Please download the Reactn app from the app store (Android and iPhone) or click on the feedback button on our website to leave both positive and … constructive feedback! You can use Reactn to give us your views whenever it is convenient to you and as often as you want. The more we get, the better we can be.
